Historical Fiction Reading Challenge – The Results!

I found this Reading Challenge from Passages to the Past a while back, and decided that I should and could sign up. I read a lot of historical fiction, right?

I went in low with my numbers, based on my reading over the last few years and went with a Medieval level of 15 books.

Some people may argue/be surprised with my definition of “Historical” fiction, but to me “Historical Fiction” is “A book set in a period significantly earlier than the time the author was writing in”.  So if the author is writing in 2015, and sets a tale in the 1970s, then I class that as “historical”. It’s a loose definition, but I’m sticking with it.

A list of the books I read, with links to reviews, is as follows:

As you can see, I didn’t *quite* meet my objective of 15 Historical fiction books in the year. I will admit that I can’t actually remember when I picked up a book to read, never mind write a review. As ever I will attempt to do better in 2020!

Print Only Reading Challenge – The Results!

2018 found me wildly missing my reading targets, whilst bringing yet more books into the house.

I needed to shift them, so I chose 2 reading challenges this year. This one covers Print Only books and is hosted by As Told By Tina. The image above is from her challenge page.

Only books that I have read that are in paper form counted for this challenge, and should tie in nicely with my other reading challenge, which is for Historical Fiction.

I went for the “2nd printing” level, which means I set myself the aim to read between 21 and 30 books in paper over the year.

The results, with links to reviews,  are as follows

Murder in the Museum by John Rowland

The Restaurant of Love Regained by Ito Ogawa

Master and God by Lindsey Davies

The Overman Culture by Edmund Cooper

The Ghost by Robert Harris

As you can see, I didn’t read paper books to the level I wanted, with the Bookcrossing events (going to the uncon, and looking after the shelves), and the fact I’ve signed up to the Persephone books 12 months thing, I’ve actually had more books coming in rather than going out….boo!

Book Review: One Night of Passion by Erica Ridley

Meet the unforgettable men of London’s most notorious tavern, The Wicked Duke. Seductively handsome, with charm and wit to spare, one night with these rakes and rogues will never be enough…

Lifelong romantic Thaddeus Middleton is on the hunt for a wife. He hopes to find a woman more attracted to him than to money. Instead, he finds himself drawn to a spitfire who isn’t interested in him at all! At least, that’s what she says when she’s not kissing him beneath the stars…

Miss Priscilla Weatherby will inherit a fortune… provided she remains unwed and scandal-free. Easy enough, until she meets a man more dangerous than haughty lords and heartless rakes. Thad is a sweet, sexy delight, whose passionate embrace will ruin everything—including her! She’ll sacrifice anything for independence. Even love…

Book Review: The First Village by Ian M Evans

Wales AD 383 is the most remote province of Roman-occupied Britain, colonised for over 300 years. Magnus Maximus, known to the Celts as Macsen Wledig, has grown restless with his role as general of the Roman army in Britannia. His nights are broken by dreams of an impossibly beautiful Welsh maiden. He sets his sights on moving his legions out of Britannia to challenge Gratianus – the emperor of the Western Roman Empire.

Flavius Arcadius is less than enamoured by his general’s plans. The army’s withdrawal will leave his family, neighbours and all of Britannia unprotected and at the mercy of internecine conflict between the local tribes and the even greater threat of pagan invaders from the east. He does, however, have a vision for the future – a fortified villa surrounded by a self-sufficient community – if only he could find a way to stay behind when the legions move.

Being a fan of authors like Lindsey Davies, Robert Harris, etc. I do have a thing for ancient (e.g. Roman) History. Therefore I had high hopes for this book. Woe!

I got to Chapter 9 – where they were *still* talking about, maybe, perhaps, going to their boss in regard to looking for the tottie he’s been dreaming about. I stopped there. Can I have a little more action please, and less as to why he’s not shagged the local freed, rich, woman who may or may not be giving him the run around?

It can/could have been good – other reviews imply it’s great later on in the story. However, I really couldn’t wait.   Too much talking, too much dry exposition, too little stuff happening….Unfortunately, too little to keep me engaged….

Book Review: Watch the Wall, Miss Seeton by Hamilton Crane

Have the smugglers made a grave mistake?

Customs & Excise are tracking a gang of cigar-smugglers who operate on the quiet Kent coast near Plummergen, home to retired art teacher Miss Emily Seeton. Their attempt at a midnight ambush goes wrong, and a man is found dead.

As Miss Seeton sketches the most notorious tomb in Plummergen churchyard – the one built for 19th-century smuggler Abraham Voller – she meets a young American tourist. He claims to be a descendant of the Voller family, but is he a truly innocent ancestor-hunter, or do smugglers inherit their trade?

When the school concert includes a performance of Kipling’s “A Smuggler’s Song” it begins to seem that everyone is at it … but we can rely on Miss Seeton to ensure that the police will get their man, and the smugglers’ dreams will go up in smoke!

Serene amidst every kind of skulduggery, this eccentric English spinster steps in where Scotland Yard stumbles, armed with nothing more than her sketchpad and umbrella.

2019 Reading Challenges and Readathons

In gathering up 2019 Reading Challenges to share on the @BXBrum Twitter account, I’ve realised I’ve found more than I ever thought I would, and that tweeting them individually would perhaps be confusing and laborious.  So I’ve decided to write a post to share them too. Please note that if links aren’t hyperlinks, it’s because I’ve not got access to the technology. I’m working on it. This IS a WIP.

I may change the order or format in due course, but I’m grouping similar challenges together, and then the others are in alphabetical order. If you know of any others, feel free to leave a link below.

Historical Fiction Reading Challenge

I found this Reading Challenge from Passages to the Past a while back, and decided that I should and could sign up. I read a lot of historical fiction, right?

I’m not going to choose my books up front. I know that if I do this, it instantly puts me off that book, as it’s too much like homework. I do have a pile of books ready, in a very rough definition of “historical fiction” that I will look to choose from first.

I’m going to go in low with my numbers, based on my reading over the last few years and go with a Medieval level of 15 books. This is one of two reading challenges I will taking part in in 2019…there will be some overlap, so between them, I hope to make my way at least through the books that are currently “not on shelves”!

Passages to the Past: 2019 Historical Fiction Reading Challenge – Sign Up page is here: http://www.passagestothepast.com/2018/10/2019-historical-fiction-reading.html

Print Only Reading Challenge

2018 found me wildly missing my reading targets, whilst bringing yet more books into the house.  They have now spilt out from the shelves and from under the coffee table, and now there’s also a big pile on top of the coffee table too!

I need to shift them, so I’ve chosen 2 reading challenges this year and this one covers Print Only books and is hosted by As Told By Tina. The image above is from her challenge page.

Only books that I have read that are in paper form will count for this challenge, and should tie in nicely with my other reading challenge, which is for Historical Fiction.  With the wind in the right direction, the two challenges will fit quite nicely together.

I’m going for the “2nd printing” level, which means I will aim to read between 21 and 30 books in paper over the year. Considering I hope 15 of those books will be historical fiction for the other challenge, I hope I make it!

Here’s the signup sheet:

Reading Challenge – Final Checkpoint

MY READER'S BLOCK_ 2016 Mount TBR Reading Challenge

As I mentioned at the end of last year, I was going to take part in one reading challenge in 2016 and I chose the Mt TBR challenge over at My Reader’s Block.  There’s was the chance to post details of your reviews each month, and every three months there’s a quarterly (personal) update as to how each participant is going against their challenge.

Needless to say, I didnt meet my overall Goodreads reading challenge of 60 books, and therefore didn’t meet the Reader’s Block challenge of reading 60 books that were on my TBR before 1/1/2016. I have done previous checkin posts (with my review links) Quarter 1, Quarter 2 and Quarter 3, but here are the remaining books that I read in the final quarter:

The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter (review still to come)

Red Chrysanthemum by Henry Mazel

These books were obtained after the 1/1/2016 and so dont qualify for the TBR Challenge unfortunately.

Christmas at the Cornish Cafe by Phillipa Ashley

A Cotswold Christmas by Kate Hewitt

A Proposal to Die For by Vivian Conroy

Wrong Brother, Right Match by Jennifer Shirk

Red-Handed in Romanee-Conti by Jean-Pierre Alaux

The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan

Sonoma Rose by Jennifer Chiaverini

Lady of the Bridge by Laura Kitchell

The Olive Branch by Jo Thomas

Hunting Season by Andrea Camilleri

The Fire Child by S. K. Tremayne

As you can see, I didnt make for the Reading Challenge. However, I think I will do a variation of this in the new year, as I continue to need to clear off the backlog off my physical TBR shelf. Here’s hoping eh?

Did you take part in any reading challenges, even casually? How did you do?

Reading Challenge – 3 month checkpoint

MY READER'S BLOCK_ 2016 Mount TBR Reading Challenge

As I mentioned at the end of last year, I was going to take part in one reading challenge in 2016 and I chose the Mt TBR challenge over at My Reader’s Block.  There’s the chance to post details of your reviews each month, and every three months there’s a quarterly (personal) update as to how each participant is going against their challenge.  My Previous 3 monthly check ins are here and here. As you can probably tell, I am seriously behind in my reading overall, though I am making some headway with the books that I had on my shelves before the start of the challenge!

The following books count towards my 60 book total:

Enter a Murderer by Ngaio Marsh

Pursued by the Rogue by Kelly Hunter

Marked by P. C. Cast

Climax by Paul Lederer

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Ben H Winters

Whisper of Magic by Patricia Rice

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

These books came in after the beginning of the year, so don’t count towards the total:

Florence Grace by Tracey Rees

Yesternight by Cat Winters

The Voice of the Violin by Albert Camilleri

Sergeant Cluff Stands Firm by Gil North

The Lavender House by Hilary Boyd

Hunting Season by Andrea Camilleri

Christmas under a Cranberry Sky by Holly Martin
